Coming Full Circle – “The Help” After 53 Years!

The Help has been a blockbuster hit over the last several weeks.  The heartwarming story of triumph tells the history of many of our families.  My own grandmother, Mrs. Maudie Lee Davis, age 83, still works for the same family after 53 years! Unlike the movie, in the early years of a very prejudice Louisiana, my grandmother is treated as one of the family, even though she is “The Help.”

Married for 67 years to Papa (age 87), and rearing 6 of their own children, grandmother was also “mother” to the Kushner children.  To show his appreciation for grandmother, Pulitzer Prize Winning Playwright, Tony Kushner, wrote a musical play on Broadway called Caroline or Change.  Kushner remembers grandmother as “tough, but impressive!”   The play starred Tonya Pinkins (All My Children, As the World Turns, Jelly’s Last Jam) and Anika Noni Rose (Dreamgirls, Voice of Princess Tiana in The Princess & The Frog) who both won Tony Awards for their performances in the play.  Tonya Pinkins’ character, Caroline, is loosely based on grandmother.

In July 2011, Mocha Moms, Inc. honored grandmother at The Help Movie Premiere during the 2011 National Conference in Las Vegas. Family members also traveled in to share this special occasion.  The highlight of the evening was the opportunity for me and Kuae Mattox, National President of Mocha Moms, Inc., to honor grandmother with a commemorative gift.  As an added treat, grandmother met Ugly Betty and Big Momma’s House actress, Octavia Spencer (“Minny Jackson”) who was in attendance as another special guest.  Octavia’s character kept us in stitches during the movie.  But as soon as the movie ended, she made her way to grandmother to embrace her with an emotional conversation and a sincere “thank you.”

A woman who is rarely at a loss for words, grandmother could only express tearful gratitude for being honored in this way while she is still alive! A true FULL CIRCLE MOMENT!

As a stay-at-home/work-from-home mom, I am eternally grateful to grandmothers like mine for paving the way.  Had it not been for them, there would be no us.  Setting an example of the first female business women and entrepreneurs, theREALhelp, goes far beyond the 2 hours and 17 minutes on the big screen!
